Sublimation On Dark Colors

Sublimation printing is a popular printing method for transferring high-quality, photo-realistic designs onto various types of substrates, including fabrics. While sublimation printing is typically used on lighter colored fabrics and substrates, it is possible to use it on dark or colored fabrics with some limitations and considerations.

Sublimation printing involves transferring ink onto a substrate using heat and pressure. During the sublimation process, the ink is absorbed into the fibers of the substrate, resulting in a vibrant, long-lasting image. However, sublimation ink is typically transparent, which means that it cannot create a white base on darker fabrics. This can result in muted colors and reduced vibrancy on dark or colored fabrics.

It needs to be noted that since the sublimation ink is transparent, ink colors will take on the undertone of the blank item color they are being transferred on.  That means if you sublimate onto a light pink shirt, the inks will take on a light pink undertone.  Since sublimation printers don’t print white, any white area prints blanks.  That means blank areas that are meant to be white will take on the light pink color.  Sometimes, this effect will be desired or will not matter to you.  But, if you want exact colors and white areas in your design, it is suggested that you use a white substrate.
